Kathmandu: The expert panel formed by the government has handed over the Labour Migration Policy draft to the Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security Sarad Singh Bhandari on Sunday.
Coordinator of the expert member Dr Ganesh Gurung submitted the report to Minister Bhandari stating that the team prepared the national policy draft with the vision of safe, secured and decent labour migration; internal employment and prosperity.
Receiving the policy draft, Minister Bhandari expressed confidence that the draft would be instrumental in charting out the national labour migration policy. He pledged to bring the policy draft into implementation as the government policy and praised the document saying it was prepared by identifying the challenges of the labour migration sector.
Minister Bhandari said that such a policy should prioritize making labour migration more orderly; repatriating the returnees and producing the human resources as per the demand of the global market. “Thousands of people are going abroad every day. It is not going to be stopped from our speeches and blame games. The alternative to employment is (better) employment. The Nepali migrants should be treated respectfully and their wages should be decent. For this, we should pay attention to the foreign migration policy and foreign policy,” Bhandari added.
The Gurung-led team prepared the draft by working for nine months, which has incorporated six policies, 24 strategies and 113 procedures to address those strategies. On the occasion, Dr Gurung said that the policy is aimed at making foreign labour migration a choice for Nepalis by creating opportunities for self-employment at home.
