35 industries taken action for child labour

Bagmati: A total of 35 industrial institutions and employers combined were taken action against the use of child labour in the last fiscal year, 2080/81BS.

The Labour and Employment Office, Hetauda punished the industries and employees as they were found using child labour, which is illegal. The Office conducted a monitoring of total 95 industries. Office chief Chhanda Narayan Shrestha said the industries and individual employers were fined over Rs 400 thousand.

Similarly, during the same period, 35 children were rescued from the industries. Most of those violating children’s rights were big industries. Moreover, there were other issues on appointment letter, remuneration, society and physical securities.

The industries were also directed to reform their management and work style to ensure labour rights and stop using child labour. The hotels, industries, and workshops were monitored by the government authority.

The Office had earlier received complaints of not getting remuneration. A total of 79 complaints were lodged in the past one year, among which 60 were settled via dialogues. Remaining 19 are under process for settlement.

The Office also conducted an awareness programme against child labour in Makwanpur, Chitwan and Sindhuli districts.
