Kathmandu: Nepali Congress leader Draupada Sharma Pokhrel has passed away. The 101-year-old leader died this morning at her house at local Ranibari. She is the spouse of freedom fighter the late Govardhan Sharma Pokhrel.
Draupada has made unparalleled contribution to the democracy movement in Nepal since the movement to overthrow the Rana autocracy in 2007 BS till the people’s movement for the restoration of democracy in 2046 BS. She was also elected the President of local women association following the 2007 BS political revolution.
Following the confiscation of all property of her husband, Govardhan Sharma, she was arrested in the political movement in 2018 BS and taken to custody in Pokhara on foot.
She was the Chairperson and Patron of the Govardhan Sharma Memorial Trust. She leaves behind four sons – Ram Chandra, Krishna Chandra, Dr Jagadish Chandra and Subas Pokhrel and two daughters – Priyambada and Satyawati.
He last rites would be performed at Pashupati Aryaghat today itself, said Ram Chandra, Drupada’s eldest son.
