NEW DELHI: At least five people died in a fire that broke out inside a private hospital in India’s eastern state of Jharkhand on Saturday, confirmed a local cop over phone.
The fire broke out on the second floor of the Hazra Hospital in the Bank More area of the Dhanbad district in the early hours of the day.
The dead included the private hospital’s owner (doctor), his wife, a servant, and two relatives. Most of the deaths were caused by asphyxiation, said the cop. “The fire broke out at the hospital at around 2:00 a.m. on Saturday and spread at a fast pace. Around nine persons… were rescued and admitted to a nearby hospital. Five of them are in serious condition.”
“There was a lot of smoke inside the hospital premises which led to most of the deaths. The cause of the fire is being ascertained,” added the cop. Xinhua
