Kathmandu: Main opposition Nepali Congress has urged the government and the Election Commission to ensure the timely election of the President. A meeting of the party office bearers and former office bearers took place at party President Sher Bahadur Deuba’s residence in Dhumbarahi drew the attention of the government and the Election Commission towards the need to hold the election on time, according to party spokesperson Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat.
“The election schedule shall not be postponed by citing legal hurdles,” the party asserted. The meeting’s understanding was that if any legal challenge was there to hold the election on time, the matter should be resolved and timely election should be ensured. In accordance with the Article 63 of the Constitution, the term of the President shall be for five years and incumbent President Bidya Devi Bhandari was appointed on the post for the second –term on March 12, 2018.
Likewise, the party has decided to float the matter with other political parties for discussions. It will be consulting with other parties in the parliament about the issue, it is said. Similarly, as per the Act relating to the President and the Vice President, 2074 BS, the EC is mandated to determine the date of the President’s election at least one month before the completion of his/her term and inform it to the government.
